daily reminder that Garnet was the first to start clapping for Steven’s song in the pilot and that’s still adorable

I LOVE AND WILL ALWAYS LOVE THAT PART. Before watching the pilot I was sure Garnet would be death serious, boring and would ignore Steven in every way possible but she’s so patient and kind to him and she also respects him a lot. It was a nice surprise. I love her.

Oh man, yea, Garnet is great. I find her character extremely fascinating, and not just because she’s pretty mysterious and secretive, comparatively.

I find her character traits fascinating because they defy expectations and yet not in the most obvious ways. She’s very stoic and a lot of humor comes from her under-reactions and stuff, she’s very stiff and not very expressive generally (especially since she wears giant glasses). She’s the leader, the tank, and someone who everyone respects the authority of. So as shittyreiko said, it really seems like she’d be serious, all-business, stiff and impersonal, kind of treating Steven (and the other Gems) as bothers. But the show absolutely does not do that. AND the instances where she acts contrary to how you’d expect are not presented as “the joke”. When she tells a joke, it’s not funny because she’s stoic and lol reserved people can’t tell jokes, its unexpected but genuinely amusing (see: Serious Steven, Steven’s Lion, So Many Birthdays, for example). When she’s kind, it’s not meant to be like “look at this big powerful person being nice, how silly is that”, it’s very genuine. It’s just who she is.

It’s interesting, too, because the way her character is utilized is also very fitting with the character’s personality. It WORKS. She’s not very expressive generally but when she is, it’s very significant. It means a lot because we know how much it takes. She definitely the least talkative out of the main characters (fits her character), but when she speaks it’s just the right things she should be saying. She’s very measured. Each action is the exact right amount in the exact right way for the result (even in a meta sense, she’s written in that way and it just…fits).

And she’s just so kind and patient and understanding, with all the other Gems. As stated by wosslogic, she’s the first to start participating in Steven’s song in the pilot (and she stops Pearl and Amethyst from teasing him). In “Serious Steven”, she reassures Pearl when Pearl worries if Steven is ready for a mission. In “Steven the Swordfighter”, she spends a lot of time with Amethyst while Pearl is a way, Etc etc. I get the impression she’s really not used to being leader, particularly in domestic situations (I’d bet anything Rose was the leader), but she really seems to try and genuinely care about the others (and the other genuinely care for each other too). Her main “issue” seems to be that when faced with negative behavior, she prefers not to confront it unless forced (like in the beginning of “Tiger Millionaire) - I gather that from Steven’s impersonation of her in “Tiger Millionaire” (“I’m not going to say anything but I expect you to understand that that was wrong.”) and the end of “Giant Woman” where she seemed to be actively avoiding addressing Pearl or Amethyst after they unfused from Opal. That makes sense to me, though, as she doesn’t seem like the most social person and confrontation is one of the most difficult things about interpersonal communication.

Like, so you don’t expect it, because you don’t see it often. The stoic character is usually no nonsense (who maybe slowly shows a soft side), or they are meant to be super-sweet and fluffy and over the top as a juxtaposition of what you expect. But Garnet is more like…you can be stoic and reserved but also be kind and funny without that being “the joke”. Those traits are not mutually exclusive.

I think it’s really great. I think a whole lot of people can relate to that (I certain can, especially when I was younger)

I wrote way more than I originally thought I would, haha. Basically my point is that Garnet is great.

My Buddhist friend was stopped by a Christian fellowship and asked if she would consider following the word of Jesus Christ. She replied, “No, thanks, but maybe next time around.”

I don’t think they got the joke but I nearly died laughing.
